Pilots sites
Two demonstration sites in France and Finland will be used to validate the tools and business models developed in this research project with different business stakeholders, and different building types and users.
French demonstration site at the university campus of Bordeaux:
The Campus of the University of Bordeaux has embarked on a vast program of refurbishment and reorganization one of the aims of which is to improve the energy performance of the buildings on the entire campus.
Nobatek, one of the partners on this project is the main sustainability consultant working on this refurbishment programme. However, the buildings selected for the demonstration of the IDEAS project will not be part of this refurbishment during the lifetime of the IDEAS project.
This will enable the assessment of the CO2 emissions reductions achieved from the solutions implemented during the lifetime of the IDEAS project independently of any subsequent building renovations.
The pilot site selected for the demonstration of the IDEAS project is located on the Bordeaux campus 5 km southwest of the centre of the city of Bordeaux. This area houses the Institute of Technology (IUT Bordeaux 1).
The institute provides teaching and office facilities for some 2000 students and 500 staff (teachers-researchers; technicians, maintenance workers and administrative staff) in 11 buildings. The total area of the site is 80 000 m2 with around 40 000 m2 of buildings.
The Finnish demonstration site in Toukovuori, Porvoo
The Finnish demonstration site of IDEAS, Toukovuori, is part of the Skaftkärr area in Porvoo. The Skaftkärr development project aims to create an energy efficient, safe, personal and cosy area that offers different living alternatives.
In addition to the energy solutions, some advanced traffic solutions will contribute to the overall CO2 reduction in the area. Toukovuori is one of the first areas to be built in Skaftkärr, and it comprises 30 hectares.
It will have 1250 inhabitants, a day-care centre, and a home for the elderly as well as a plot for industrial facilities, currently housing a carpentry shop.
The city planning processes in Porvoo is being developed to improve the way energy efficiency is addressed.
To this end, planning and innovation is being conducted in close collaboration with local authorities, energy companies, construction companies, other organisations and future inhabitants involved in the Skaftkärr project.
More information about the Skaftkärr development can be found here. (Finnish or Swedish versions are also available.)
